I'm not sure about it replacing the default camera when pressing the DX's dedicated camera button (the Incredible doesn't have a dedicated button) there is a free version of Vignette you can try. I do know there is a setting in Vignette to set it as the default camera.

As far as quality of images between the two straight up - I haven't noticed any difference on my phone.

are you able to take pics by tapping the screen with this app or do you have to use the hard buttons

ok i answered my own question. it is an option. now on to a newer, more serious question...

why are these file sizes so huge? not using any effects, full 8mp setting, and i'm getting file sizes of 6mb. the default camera app with the same full 8mp setting is 2mb. why the HUGE discrepancy???

sorry to keep posting about this but i have another serious question. what "framing" settings should i be using for the incredible? i noticed by fooling around that my pics seem to be getting cropped on the left and right sides when i'm taking pics in landscape mode. what settings should i be using to ensure that i'm getting the full 8mp widescreen image with zero cropping?

I suspect the file size difference is caused by not using compression in Vignette.

That depends on what your camera is set to...

if your stock camera is set to 8MP then your photo will be 3264x2448
if you put a checkmark in the Widescreen setting your photo will be 3264x1952

If you shoot Vignette with frames set to none your photo will be 3264x2448
If you shoot Vignette with frames set to Fullscreen your photo will be 3264x1958

and yes I'd guess the file size difference has to do with image compression software in the stock camera app

Having done more extensive testing - the images I took with Vignette with no frames or effects look better than my pictures taken with the stock camera app

Examples (Photobucket automagically resizes images down)

Vignette: Default settings, no effects, Fullscreen Frame = 4.8 mb file size

Droid Incredible Camera App: Default settings with widescreen checked = 2 mb file size

The Vignette shot might be a bit darker, but is crisper and doesn't have blown out highlights like the camera app shot
    indianajonze and Arelunde like this.

I sent an email to the developer:

Can Vignette take over as the default camera app that is brought up when pressing the camera button on the Droid X? I have heard some tell that the image file sizes in Vignette are larger than the stock camera images, does this imply that the Vignette app uses less compression than the default app?
After seeing the pictures above, the Vignette images do look significantly better. You convinced me to purchase the app now.

    Yeah, double post.

Yes, the hard buttons will bring up the Vignette application if it has been set as the default app.

It takes a bit of time for the images to be processed, that is interesting. I wonder if having a faster SD card would help with that...

I wish I could zoom using the volume rocker, I sent a feature request. Speaking of zoom, it is kind of weird compared to the stock application. Instead of zooming on the entire screen, it just makes the selection area smaller it seems. Not sure if that means it is using digital zoom or what...

The camera doesn't have an optical zoom - so the only option IS a digital zoom - which is just basically cropping the image down

Ahh, I didn't think of that. I guess it makes sense that they couldn't fit an optical zoom in the already thin X.

I think I will contact the dev and see if they can add more EXIF data to the images themselves (like frame/effect/iso etc)

no problem indianajonze! feel free to shoot me a PM here if you have more questions about the app!

I wonder what it would take to get AC to do a front page story on Vignette....

actually i like both shots and would be glad for either. i don't think this example should convince someone to get vignette, or not. so i'm still curious, but haven't purchased the app

They weren't meant to be a selling point for the app - just a comparison between Vignette and the stock Camera app on my Incredible - both apps do have adjustments to help them generate better images (contrast/sharpness etc)

These were also so I could see just how big of a file size difference there was as well

Damn dude that is awesome. I was looking at your pics taken with your Dinc... WOW. I've always been a believer that a great picture is more about the person taking the picture instead of what's. I have to admit, all those settings do look pretty overwhelming. You know of any sites that has a good guideline of all the different meanings of settings? I have an Evo and to my knowledge the Inc and Evo have the same camera. So I'm very excited to use this app. I wish they had a true panoramic setting though.

Yeah I really wish there was some app that would do a good job of stitching photos together for panoramic shots. Even my old LG Dare could do it with relative ease. I know the Droid X has stitching panoramic shots available...

This text magically appeared thanks to my Droid Incredible...

I am getting an error about a hardware problem on my Captivate, I think it may be related to setting the shutter sound, I would like some sound but this seems to cause issues.

About the fast shot mode. Does it shot this at the cameras max resolution or are they taken in low-res like most low-end digital cameras?

Here's a shot I took using my magnetic macro lens and Vignette. I took it by accident! I was messing with my macro lens and had a rosary close that I was going to take pictures of, and ended up with this. I'm not a photographer - and I don't understand all the settings in the camera (I even took photography in high school and never "got it") Vignette lets the average user do some really cool stuff.

To the OP - how did you get those flowers to only highlight the yellow? I saw you used New York, but when I use those filters I seem to get color everywhere.. I wish someone would make a PICNIK app!! SO many functions, I take a TON of pictures, I'd love to edit them on my phone.

I didn't do anything other than run that shot of the lilies through Vignette with the New York filter - it just came out that way much to my surprise!

Nice macro shot too I've been meaning to get myself one of those add-on macro lenses to play with

I freakin' love this app. One of the main reasons for my abandonment of blackberry was the fantastic camera on the Incredible. With Vignette a good thing is even better. I bought it the first day I got my phone and have had no regrets.

The only thing that tripped me up were the options. So many to choose from that I couldn't decide what to use. So, I put everything on random. That way, it's a surprise. And who doesn't like a surprise? Especially when it is so cool looking.

    On the HTC Evo...two things...

1 - Regular pictures, no filters etc...seem blurry?
2 - If I select "auto focus when screen is touched" - how do I actually take a picture?

    THANKS!

    1) No clue - on my Incredible the pictures taken with Vignette looks better than from the camera app

    2) Once again - no clue, on the Incredible I use the optical trackball button to take photos

I suggest emailing the dev and asking them
