You have a paid keyboard on an Android version less than 4.2 is the most likely reason. It is a known issue and can't really be fixed unless you are rooted.

I'm on 4.2.2, but probably the same issue. Thanks. It certainly felt like it was google trying to give me a hard time. lol. knew it.
