i remember a friend having an app on the iphone... where you can select some categories and the app will randomly recommend a restaurant that fits the criteria

is there an app like that available for android?

I really like Yelp. It has helped me find some pretty good restaurants in various cities.

I use "around me" it deals with more than just restaurants and the search is local with a settable radius.

Zagat has a mobile site and a mobile app but its very pricey, but they do have a free applicaiton called NRU that is very cool and locates restaurants and bars near you in a 360 degree view and compass view, very cool.

Others mentioned Yelp's app which is great as well as the urbanspoon app, opentable app, city search app and the places app from google.
