In regards to the Google Voice Integration, how are text messages and MMS handled?

Android Newbie - Question regarding Google Voice Integration

Hey Everyone,

I'm switching carriers in the US because my new android phone isn't compatible with my current carrier. I was wondering what the pros/cons of porting the number to Google Voice would be. I have used Google Voice on iOS but not extensively and I know Google Voice has full integration within Android phones.

I just had a couple of questions regarding this, how are text messages / MMS handled ? And since Google Voice is always running in the background how much data does it use ?

I was just wondering if it would be smart doing this and the experience would be seamless or is it always better to port your number to the carrier. I've switched carriers between MVNO's a few times and I'm sick of porting my number all the time. Hoping to get some insight on this.

I guess it's too late for advice, but for what it's worth, I ported my number to Google Voice years ago, and it's been great. Now that Hangouts integration and MMS are available, it's even better than ever.
