I'm looking for the equivalent of Notepad on Windows or Text Edit on Mac for the Android. I want an extremely basic, lightweight, gimmick free, marketing free app that just does its job and keeps my stuff private. No internet connectivity and just generating basic txt for to the filesystem would be a plus. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Hmm thanks for the suggestion but it seems a bit too 'busy'. I'm surprised android doesnt include it by default.

Remember, basic Android is more of a foundation than a complete suite of OS and apps. It allows users to customize things more effectively, so if a user prefers a specific notepad app, he doesn't have to deal with an otherwise unwanted preinstalled notepad. Google Keep is an excellent note-taking app, but it syncs with your Google account in the cloud, which you said you don't want.

    How about Simple Notepad?
