I searched and found nothing on this, but how to Apps/Widgets update? Automatically? Manually? A mix of both?

If you go into the Android Market, and click downloads in the menu, it gives you a list of all apps that you have downloaded. If an app has an update available, it will tell you there. Clicking it will take you through the steps to update it.
You can also set the Market to check occasionally and notify you when updates are available.
For stock, preloaded apps, like the gmail app, or messaging, I think the system automatically updates those.
So the answer is, that apps update through a mix of both, depending on how they're on the system.

    Hope this helps!

Well ain't that cool! Thanks, man. Girl. Whatever. Glad I asked, hadn't bumped into that screen before. This is kind of like the tax code. You know the answer's in there...but where?

The status bar up top will also notify you when there's an update available. Also available in the Notifications "shade" that you can pull down from the upper status bar. That's the best way to know that a notification is available, then you can follow herki's directions to actually update it.

The notification will show up unless you turn it off in market. I don't remember if market is notification on or off by default.

It must be on by default because I've never changed it in mine. If I did, I didn't know I did anyway!

the update notification in the status/shade isn't pushed though and seems to check whenever it feels like it. i find going to the downloads section much faster than hoping the phone will tell me when there's an update.

the downloads section will put any app with an update at the top of the list, which makes it easier to find too.
