As the title states. Is this possible? I read somewhere it was, did a quick search and couldn't figure it out. Any ideas?

Sign up for Google Voice. Do that on a computer, not your phone, by signing into your gmail account, then typing Google Voice in the address bar and following the link. Once your Google Voice account is set up, download the app onto your phone. It will ask you to make Google Voice your voicemail provider, and you'll say Yes. You can also designate Hangouts as your SMS app for both your Google Voice number and your carrier number. (In the SMS settings within Hangouts, you can instruct it which number to use for your texts).

You do not have to use the Google Voice number, but its handy to have in case you need an extra phone number.

This sounds a bit confusing because Google Voice is an older app in the process of getting merged into Hangouts. But the end result is that in Hangouts, you'll have a single inbox combining texts and visual voicemail.
