Copy & Paste in other messaging apps

I have a note 3 and can copy and paste fine using the default samsung messaging app but when using hangouts or Google Messenger, I can't. Is this unique to the note 3? I really want to use Google messaging apps because of better support with Android Wear (I have the zenwatch) but doing so seems to not allow me to paste in the text box. What's going on?

I just tried it on a friend's Note 3 and on my Note 4 and we can both copy text and paste text into it without issues. Just tap and holding on the text input field and voila!
