Hello. I'm going to be a new Android user for the 1st time. I'm coming from BlackBerry whose OS, BB10 has become absolutely useless. Therefore I have a Nexus 6P on order.

But what exactly is Google hangout? Is it a chatting app? Is it a universal inbox for all manners of communication including emails, chats, Facebook messages, twitter, etc?

The Hangouts app serves several functions:

    1. Hangouts instant messaging. This is like test messaging, but requires wi-fi or mobile data to be on. The difference is that there are no character limits to what you send, and you can send photos over wi-fi. With MMS, you need to be on mobile data to send photos. In addition, you can participate in Hangouts on your computer or tablet as well, not just your phone.

    2. Hangouts video calls. If you have a conversation thread open with someone (or with multiple people), you can tap a button and instantly create a video chat with everyone. Only those who choose to participate in the video call will show up--you can ignore the call if you want.

    3. With the added Hangouts Dialer app, you can make phone calls over wi-fi (or mobile data) using the internet, rather than a voice plan. Calls are free throughout the US and Canada (and they're even free if you're abroad, and call back to the US). Rates are pretty cheap if you want to call other countries.

    4. Hangouts can also be your default SMS app, so that all of your messaging can be done there.

I recently came from BB10 as well and my LG G4 is my first Android phone.

I never use Hangouts, but I would describe it like Android's take on BBM on BB10.

The above reply is a good run down.

I've done MMS (photos and group SMS) via WiFi with no problem (using GV).

Oh, good point. I don't use Google Voice, so I wasn't aware of that.

That can make video calls, as well as international phone calls over wi-fi or mobile data.

It's very similar to Skype, but it's from Google not Microsoft.

Hangout is not good in my opinion. If you need an IM, try Viber or WatsApp or Telegram.
