    I have Note2 with Android 4.4.2 and Maps 9.16.2

I map a route and while driving it shows alternate route suggestions in gray with little bubbles telling the minutes difference to help me make the driving choice. However, my wife has an S6 with Android 5.1.1 and Maps 9.16.2, but when she is driving a route it does show alternate suggestions in gray, BUT SHE DOES NOT GET THE LITTLE TIME DIFFERENCE BUBBLES.
    WHY?

    Another "improvement" in Maps, probably.

You can back up your version (use App Backup & Restore), copy the resulting apk file to her phone (back up her version also, in case she wants it back), uninstall Maps on her phone and install your version on her phone. (Just tapping the apk file in a file manager will cause it to run the installer.) Since they're constantly "improving" Maps (and it gets worse with each improvement), I back up every version as soon as I get the update (which I have set to NOT automatically update), so I can run the version I prefer. I'm currently running 8.4.1. (I also run MyDirections so that Maps is actually usable if you have more than 2 or 3 destinations you go to.)

Thanks for the suggestion. It's the same ver number on both phones, so I didn't think of this. Tried it but no luck.

I was thinking that maybe they only show these route difference bubbles on larger screens since I have a Note2 (the bubbles are very tiny) BUT these WERE present on her Stratosphere which had a smaller screen.

    Frustrating!
