I've done some digging and the last comprehensive thread on this topic appears to be from way back in 2012. Apologies if I've missed something.

What are your favourite Android Music apps, and why?

    Two categories:

    1. Player for songs on device
    2. Streaming

I dont keep any music on my device except those i save from Spotify or from my personal collection via Google Music.

I'm considering dropping Spotify for just Google Music since it allows you to save music to the SD card.

Trying one called "Remix" - seems OK. I wonder whether the paid version is better?

Formerly Spotify user, switched over to Google Play music since you get it with YouTube Red.

    Works pretty well.

You may want to check out doubleTwist CloudPlayer. It's an advanced alternative to Google Play Music offering the best of both worlds: offline/local playback as well as streaming from Dropbox, OneDrive and Google Drive. It comes with a 30 day free trial for premium features.

Note: I'm the doubleTwist co-founder I have a handful of promo codes to give to anyone who participates in this thread and wants to give it a spin.

... Okay, so why does it not find folders on SD card?
Nor can it play offline from google drive
    Tried it and removed it....

    What was missing?

Did you try going to CloudPlayer Settings -> Scan Local Storage to select the folder where you have stored music on your SD card?

As far as offline playback from Google Drive, or any other supported cloud service, tap on the 3-dot menu next to the song, artist, album or playlist you want to cache and check the "Keep Offline" box. If you have selected an entire playlist or a large album, this may take a while depending on your network speed.

Google Play and Spotify are both pretty nifty, but they're frustrating when they struggle to connect to the internet.

I have been playing with this app for a while. I have a few queries.

    1. What is the difference between this and the old player? Apart from Cloud player.
    2. Can we please have a function to select few folders and not display all files.
    3. In default screen can you please add Now playing?
    4. I think you guys are already working on Dark theme.

I am willing to buy the app if the pomo code does not provide future updates. Not sure about it. But if it does I would like to have one.

The dark theme is coming very soon! You may want to join the private beta group as we'll release it there first.

As far as differences go between CloudPlayer and doubleTwist Classic Player: CloudPlayer was completely redesigned and rearchitected from the group up. It features a material design UI, Chromecast support, 10-band EQ, better handling of large media libraries and much more. A lot of these improvements, minus cloud support, will be ported into the Classic app once we complete the revamp in the coming months.

If you have folders you want to exclude from your library, you can do the following: go to the Folders view, tap on the 3-dot menu next to the folder you want to ban and select "Ban Folder". We don't currently have a way to batch-ban folders, but most people don't have a ton of junk folders anyway.

Now as far as the Now Playing default screen goes, it's not really a separate screen and it's present on several types of views so it's not suitable as a default option. Currently, if Android kills the app after some period of inactivity in the background, it may "forget" its Now Playing state. We'll look into ways to avoid this.

I have another small feedback. When you are on the now playing screen and the music is paused. If you click on next song it automatically starts. Wouldn't it better if it stays paused?

This is by design. I realize that it comes down to preference though. Some folks like the fact that they don't need to manually tap Play, while others may want it the way you suggested. It's hard to please everyone

I use Poweramp for local playing. After rooting and using one of those sound enhancers you find on Xda it can be pretty epic.

I spend most of my time listening to SoundCloud though. SoundCloud is a treasure chest of remixes some the music doesn't get old. The new Google owned Songza has a pretty nice UI too.

    For the purpose #1

It is either PowerAmp for its sound quality, file settings, variety of features.

or JetAudio for its sound quality and simple User Interface
