Does Android Pay work when overseas?

[AC Question]

My UK debit card works at US ATM machines, but not for purchases in the USA. Will Android Pay (fronting for my UK debit card) work for making payments in the USA?

I would imagine no, as the actual card can't make payments in the US.

Fair enough, but it's not my card that's making the payment, but the virtual card provided by Android pay which is backed by my card (and bank).

Google wallet support suggest that "All retailers who accept contactless payments will accept Android Pay whether they’re in the UK or overseas." which implies that this will work.

Has anyone tried it?

Used mine in McDonald's yesterday. No problem. If you're card can make payments abroad via the machine in store then the same can be said for Android pay via phone.
