I got all excited because I actually don't particularly like Hangouts for handling my SMS, but its the only solution currently for people like me who use GV as their main number exclusively (I ported my old number to Google so I could play the prepaid game and wouldn't be tied to any carrier).
I find Hangouts clunky because I use it as a messaging system outside of SMS as well, and sometimes it is confusing to have SMS and IP calls/chats/etc in the same UI (have to keep track of which conversation is going where on their end). But it supports being the default SMS app on my phone, where I can set it to use my GV account for all messages instead of my carrier SMS, as well as supporting MMS, group texts, etc, which the older GV platform didn't support on its own.
I'm glad to see GV get a makeover and finally support all the things Hangouts is supposed to be doing! But... I don't see a way to make it the default SMS app. That's a deal breaker! Has anyone had any luck with this? Its darned near perfect otherwise, I'd gladly switch out if they could make it work as a messaging replacement the way they did Hangouts!
