my huawei phone has android 6.0 but recently discovered that the note taking app notepad version 010 had the name com.example.android.notepad and had permission to make calls, determine location and access the internet. The source of the app is 'unkown'... it is a system app apparently but how normal is any of that?

I think this is fine. What device are you using? I can then replicate it on my Huawei device and give you a more accurate answer.
