    There isn't any option to "download" or "save" an image that was sent to me in whatsapp chat. HELP

    Open the photo in WhatsApp, 3 dots, share.
    Are you backing up to Google photos?

    But on Android can't it be saved to the phone gallery or internal storage? Like on iPhone?

    Gallery isn't a "place", it's an app. You save pictures to the phone, restart it to rebuild the mediascan database - and the pictures will be displayed by Gallery. (The same with music player apps - you don't save music to them, you save music files to the phone, then the player apps look in the database for "sound" files.)

    Yes it does , in my Samsung photo gallery it will populate its own folder WhatsApp and it in internal memory .
