Perhaps this has been answered already, but can Android Auto be developed for a slightly older infotainment system like that in a 2014 Mazda 6? I love my car, but the navigation system is horrible as is the Bluetooth integration. It would be awesome if Android Auto could work with slightly older systems.

Technically yes it's possible, Practically no, it's unlikely to happen in the vast majority of cases.

No manufacturer of cars or head units has indicated they would add support to older products. I think the closest such statement is for some 2016 cars which may be retrofitted because software was not ready at manufacture time, such as some Hyundai's.
