Spotify won't play music

All of the sudden Spotify won't play music on my JVC KWV830BT head unit via Android Auto. Everything else works (Google Maps, OK Google, WhatsApp, SMS). Spotify launches and appears to be playing music, but no sounds is produced through my vehicle's sound system. The radio just keeps play. I can see the progress bar for a song progressing as if it's playing. I can pause, skip, browse etc, but the radio keeps playing instead of Spotify.

I'm connected via USB, and presumably bluetooth is connected. Oh and phone calls work fine too.

Any ideas?

This started happening to me as well, very odd, and annoying. I found 2 solutions.
1) Go into the app settings and force close Spotify then reopen
2) on my pioneer HU I can press the audio button and choose Google play music, press play to start playing whatever is on the queue, then press audio again, switch back to Spotify and it works after that.

I would love to know the root of the problem, but at least the workarounds aren't time consuming for now. I thought it was just me.
