For 2D games, I´m using AndEngine. I do not like Cocos very much for Android development

    apache cordova

but cordova is ok to do simple apps that doesn't require complex graphics or animation, since it's only a WebView that loads html + css + javascript.

    BTW: Unity 2D is Free?

I donno why game engines are usually one of the big question and big issues for game developers specially indie game developers.

    That's not an important issue.

How many times you had problem with the game engine you were using and preferred to another one during development?
There are lots of topics you have to notice them before start choosing the game engine.

Wrote my own, but for window-handling and gamepad support I use libSDL2.
For the physics, I use OpenDE physics engine.

We are using our own in-house engine called "drahtkern".
You can find some infos about it here: MADE - drahtkern cross-platform 3D engine C++/C#
There is also some more info about our engine hidden inside our blog: MADE - Blog - we are MADE
It's pretty powerful tech, and there are several reasons why it's better than unity/unreal/cryengine for small teams.

While it's not available for the public right now, there is a possibility that it will be public soon...

I spent a very long time designing and then laying out my menus and other GUI things programmatically, and then they went and released 4.6
