Pokego closes when I try to catch pokémon

[Android Central Question]

Pokémon Go loads normally for me and does everything else normally such as evolving, powerups, and pokéstops, but as soon as I tap on a pokémon or try to claim an "encounter" field research reward, the app immediately closes. I've tried reinstalling it from google play and clearing the cache, and it won't let me send an error message to Niantic for some reason. Is there anything else I can try?

Are you trying to use AR? Logout and back in and elect to not use AR when entering an encounter.

Or will it not get that far?

Also, what device are you using? Do you have a good gps connection?

I haven't been using AR for a bit, and it doesn't even start loading the encounter. It closes the app the moment I touch the pokémon. I'm using a Fairphone 2, and the gps can be a bit clunky but it's no worse than usual. My phone's getting a bit old and slow, could encounters be harder on it than the rest of the game to a point where it crashes?
