So, I've been on P since DP2 and have not had any problems continuing to use Google/Android Pay, which I use daily.

Yesterday afternoon, I installed the latest DP4 update and stopped at the grocery store two hours later; once again, Google Pay worked just fine.

This morning, however - in the very same store - Google Pay failed with message "Google Pay cannot be used ..." (I forget the rest). Tried it a couple more times and finally paid with my debit card.

Just now, I tried to delete and re-add my credit cards in Google Pay and for each of them I received the message, "Can't pay in stores on this phone - This phone can't be used to pay in stores. This may be because it is rooted or altered in some other way."

It's good that you found the bug (and I'm SURE you've reported it, right?), but this is why they tell you not to use these developer previews on your daily-use devices...

I don't have a problem with that; I'm an IT guy and always testing stuff and/or dealing with bugs.

The point is, for those who *do* care, DP4 seems to break Google Pay. More specifically, it is possible that the Device Health Services update that I picked up last night is the actual culprit (in conjunction with DP4?) because Google Pay worked a few hours after DP4 installed but no longer works after the Device Health Services update.

Since DHS is a battery usage app, did you try turning battery optimization off for Google Pay?

    Indeed...

I opened Settings (this is a Pixel XL2 by the way) and searched for "health" which popped up Device Health in App settings.

I hit the disable button for Device Health services and, after the "Are you sure" question, it offered to replace it with the factory version to which I said yes.

Went back to Google Pay and was able to successfully re-add my credit cards.

Haven't done an in-store test yet, but the fact that I did not receive an error message when adding the cards is a good sign.

Google Pay is not intended to work on a beta OS. By some unintended quirk, Google Pay has been working on P; however, as P is not CTS certified, P is technically not considered to be "safe," therefore, Google Pay should never have worked on any DP version of P.

The latest I have read is that it works so long as the bootloader is not unlocked. Mine is not.

Regardless, in this case it turns out that it was the latest update to Device Health Services (maybe in conjunction with DP4, maybe not) that actually seems to have broke Google Pay.

Mine still works but I don't think I got an update for DHS. Mine was last updated Jun 1st.

Seems to load up on mine. I will have to test it out one day at a store and see.

You can delete a card and then re-add it; see if you get the error message I quoted above.

Depends on how close you are to a store.

You can delete and re-add in 60 seconds.
