Does it really help extend battery life by automatically adjusting the brightness of the screen depending the environment one uses his handset in...or does it actually make matters worse by draining the battery?!

I leave mine on , not do much to save battery but to adjust in my lighting condition. You'll need to train it for a week though .

It's _use-less_ on my Pixel XL. The sensor that it uses (on the viewing side??) is much too directional. If I face it to a strong source the display reacts when I rather it didn't.
