I've been searching forums for hours and can't find a clear solution to my predicament. First of all, I'm broke. This means that I cannot afford a data plan. I am on the cheapest plan available from T-mobile and can't afford to add anything. That being said, my phone is only a few calls away from becoming a brick and I am due for an upgrade with another 2-year contract. The only phones offered for free say they require a data plan. I've been looking at the T-mobile Comet and see that it has WiFi capabilities, but only with a data plan. I've also heard that an unlocked Comet can use WiFi without a data plan, but T-mobile somehow blocks this capability if you get the phone from them. My question, then, is this: Is there a way (unlocking, rooting, etc.) to access WiFi without a data plan if I get my phone from T-mobile? I know basically nothing about Android or Linux, but I can learn if I need to.

    Thanks.

You would need to get a non tmobile branded device to have this work with non data plan requirement
