I have an Xperia L1 and a Galaxy A70. Both screens switch on when I unplug the charger. No big deal, but how can I stop it?

Welcome to the Android Central forums!

That's likely an informational feature, so you can quickly check the charge status when you disconnect. I seem to recall there used to be an action to turn it off, but I may be mistaken. It is quite useful in helping to identify if your charging cable is going bad by lighting up when the cable loses charge after aging some time.

Both my LG G4 and LG V30 do that. Also when plugging in the charging cable.
If you don't interact with the screen, it should go back to the lock screen after whatever the timeout value is.

If you use a short screen timeout like 15 seconds that's probably the best option for you.
