I just got a new phone for the kids and wow the widgets are huge for a 6.4 display. Is there anyway to change the text size? I already went into display and changed both the fonts and display size but to no effect?

Are you referring to the clock in the center of the screen?
If so, any options about the display of the clock normally will be found in the clock app settings.

Which phone? Not all launchers allow you to adjust widget size. Long-press the widget, then see if an outline appears around the widget with anchor points that you can move to adjust the size. Or long-press the widget and see if you get a little menu with an option to Resize Widget. If you don't, then the launcher doesn't let you resize. You'd have to install a 3rd party launcher like Nova, which does have this option.
