Using pixel 3 xl for hardware. Recently got a notification and downloaded a testing version of gpay. But seems to offer the exact same functionalities as google pay. What's the difference?

Welcome to Android Central! Where did you download and install this GPay app from? The official name of the app is Google Pay, but the app icon says GPay.

I would definitely go back to where you downloaded it and see if the developer is Google. I would also caution against adding any financial data to the app if it didn't come from the Play Store. Google doesn't usually recommend their apps but you do have a Pixel so things might be different between you and Google on a Google device.

from my understanding gpay is google pay but you are sending money to another person. personally I would never click on a link from an unsolicted text. It may not be what it claimed to be.

GPay used to be called Google Wallet there is a difference between the to apps even though they both can be used to store your bank card info and if you have NFC on your device you can then use your phone to pay instead of having to pull out your card at the checkout as long as the store has a GPay Logo at the checkout stand which most places do nowadays
Google pay is used mostly online purchases GPay is used at brick and mortar stores even though I found they both work at the brick and mortar as long as you have your bank card linked to GPay which requires a 2 step verification

What? GPay is Google Pay. One is just an abbreviation of the other. Android Pay and Google Wallet combined to become the one entity known as GPay/Google Pay. Since we never heard back from the OP it is difficult to say for certain but it sounds more like a clone of Google Pay used to phish for account information.

I'm not the OP, but there is certainly two different apps. I just setup two Pixel 6s yesterday, one for me, the second for my wife; both coming from Pixel 3. I have not added new apps, and both have an icon for Google Pay and one for GPay, as shown in the screenshot. There was a Google TV app in between the two, which I removed.

For anyone else that finds their way here looking for an answer like I did...

I contacted Support. I had to send them the screenshot I posted above before they understood what I was talking about.

They told me "Google Pay" was the old app and has been replaced by "GPay". The theory is, GPay was preloaded on the P6 and Google Pay was installed during the xfer from P3 to P6. I simply deleted "Google Pay".

Yep, it's totally fine to remove the older deprecated Google Pay app.
