"Waiting for connection..." when sending each other texts

[Android Central Question]

Hi there,

A friend and I are having an issue wherein we're unable to send each other texts without internet being enabled. Sending an SMS offline just displays "Waiting for connection..." The Chat feature is enabled on our phones, but neither of us are having this problem with any other contacts. How do I fix this while keeping Chat feature enabled?

Any suggestion is appreciated!

Hi, thank you for your response.
We're on Canadian carriers, one Rogers and the other Videotron. Mine is a Moto G7 and theirs is a Pixel 3a.
It does work if we turn out chat features off, but they use the chat feature with everyone else in their contact list, so we don't really want it off.

Chat needs internet. (So do long [longer than 160 character] SMS messages, unless you have "don't break" disabled.)

When you say that you're sending texts without internet enabled, do you mean that you're turning off mobile data on the phone?

Rukbat: What's strange is that they are able to text other people regularly even when mobile data is disabled and chat is enabled.

Are those other people they're texting also on RCS?

So if both people have Chat enabled, they absolutely have to have an internet connection when they text each other?

I believe so: https://www.pocket-lint.com/phones/...ng-format-set-to-take-over-your-android-phone. I'm not sure if the phones are smart enough to fall back on standard SMS if mobile data isn't available.

Check if you have permission on for sms , long press the app >tap info>permission

I can make make a sms with wifi off and data off on Google message app

I found the answer: when I see the "Waiting for Connection" message I can simply hold down on the message and press resend in the context menu. That makes it revert to SMS.
