I just bought a new phone (OnePlus 8T) that supports fast charging. If I use the cable and charger provided, it's charging super fast - averaging 2000mA according to Ampere app.
But if I use the old cable and charger that I've been using to charge my old phone, it's averaging <500mA, even though the exact same cable and charger would average 1000mA or more for my old phone.
    How does that make sense?

The cable and charger you using probably doesn't enable warp charging just rapid charge .

There are numerous charging protocols. Sounds like a compatibility issue and the old charger and phone are defaulting back to the traditional USB standard.
