Google Play Store Refuses To Update Chrome

Hi all! I noticed that Google Play Store is refusing to update "Android System WebView" and "Google Chrome" applications on my OnePlus Nord.

I had 9 applications with a pending update, so I clicked "Update All". In the screenshot linked below you can see that everything started downloading except for 2 applications. If I go into those individual applications and click "Update", then the circle starts spinning and I get "Pending..." however the download never starts.

I am a bit concerned, as both applications have not been updated for 3 months now! There's plenty of storage space on the phone, so no reason as to why they shouldn't download.

Your help is much appreciated!

You have to update System WebView and Chrome one at a time... you can't have them updating with anything else. It's a very common problem unfortunately :-\

If I click in to "Android System WebView" and click "Update" to update just this application then it says "Pending..." forever and nothing happens. It doesn't download.

I tried to do the same with Google Chrome first and that doesn't work either.

You may need to uninstall the updates from settings-apps first and then try to update them.

Is it safe to do that? I don't want to "downgrade" the apps and catch a virus or something before I can fully update it.

Yes it is totally safe. Google often suggest uninstalling updates if an update breaks one of their apps. You can't catch a virus like that on Android. As long as you are using the Play Store apps are scanned for malware by Play Protect before installation.

So I did "uninstall updates" on both applications, then tried to update them one-by-one in the Play Store and it still won't update. Just "Pending..." :(

Welcome to Android Central! Try going to Settings>Apps, select Google Play Store, tap Storage, and Clear Cache/Clear Data, then Force Stop. Do the same for Download Manager -- you probably have to tap Menu>Show System to see it. Now try again.

It worked! Thanks a lot

I had the same issue on my pixel.... from here on out manually update them one at a time through the play store, and restart your phone before you update them. I haven't had an issue since updating them that way. I'm glad B Diddy was able to solve it for you... he's one of our "Hired Hitmen" when it comes to problem solving ;)
