Android Central Question

I have a moto 5g ace and I absolutely hate google photos. 90% of my photos that were backed up on my last phone aren't showing up at all. And in all honestly I never even want to use Google photos so please don't try to convince me. All the 3rd party gallery apps look sketchy it have a paywall. Why even try to switch to Google photos anyway? It's not even practical like a built in gallery. I just want my gallery back so I can access photos I just took PROPERLY!!!

Why it is no longer the default app, on some devices at least, I don’t know.

Because manufacturers are getting lazy, removing their apps and defaulting to Google's apps. I've seen it already with phone dialers and voice dialing/assistant functions, texting options, and apparently now with a gallery replacement. The thing that made Android great was all the different manufacturer options, but that is starting to go away. Things have become more cookie cutter over the past few years, and if the trend contributes, Android will basically become like Apple. You might have different brand options, but they'll all look and act the same with limited options to personalize your experience.

Yep, more and more manufacturers have gone towards a stock Android experience, Samsung is the only one that seems to resist Google now that LG is gone.

I absolutely love Google Photos -- I think it's Google's best service. But that's just my opinion (and the opinion of lots of people out there:)), so I'm not going to try to convince you. Incidentally, if you really did back up those photos to Google Photos, then just go to photos.google.com on your computer browser and see if the photos are there.

For a good basic gallery app, try Simple Gallery Pro. It's highly recommended by the Android tech writer I trust the most, JR Raphael.

I used the free version of that on an older phone that had also defaulted to Google Photos, and I agree it is a nice one (very similar to LG's OEM gallery, for anyone familiar with that). I never paid for the full version, though.
