Chromecast wants me reformat my hard drive - again

I have a 1TB nvme drive connected to my Chromecast hub. I format the disk to Ms-Dos(Fat) on my Mac. Chromecast recognizes the drive - but asks me to reformat. When I do so, my Mac doesn't recognize the drive, and asks me to initialize. I'm baffled
