I know most phones have a safety built in when the battery or internal temp reaches a certain level it will automatically shut down to prevent damage. The device won't restart until it's reached a safe temp.

    Welcome to the forums.
+1 on Paul's idea. Give it about 30 minutes and see what happens. Let it air cool on it's own, don't put it in a cooler place like the fridge or anything like that (the rapid cooling can probably crack soldering and other parts of the circuitry).

Welcome to Android Central! Also, the battery could be failing. Take it out, lay it flat on a table, and try to spin it. If it spins freely, it's bulging in the middle, which is a bad sign. Try a replacement battery.
