Could the geeks and tekkies among us please say whether there is any science behind the claim that it's wise to power down a phone once a week or so, for anything from a few seconds to an hour depending on who says it? For all the rest of us know, it may be good, but it may be useless or even bad.

It can help to clear things out of cache in the memory but other than that usually no. I reboot for the heck of it but most people reboot when battery life starts plummeting since that's usually a wake lock issue and rebooting solves that.
