So I'm going to live in Japan next month and I've been worried about my phone situation. If put a Japanese Sim card in my phone will it work in japan ? I would have to unlock my phone to do that right? And would unlocking my phone erase my music and pictures on my phone ?

Yes, you would need to unlock your phone. If you are an AT&T customer for the past 6 months and your account is in good standing they should provide you with the unlock code. Carrier's will help unlock their phones in exactly your sort of situation (moving or traveling) so long as you don't owe anything on the phone or are not defaulting on a service contract.

Carrier Unlocking will not cause any data loss.

BTW: can you give more details? Which Galaxy model? Is it AT&T branded?

its a galaxy s5 and yes it is ATT branded!

So inquire with AT&T for the unlock code: https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...viceunlock%2Fclient%2Fen_US%2F&token=Bo953gxR Once you get an unlock code you can unlock the phone by powering down, putting in any non-AT&T SIM (borrow one from a friend) and putting in the unlock code at the prompt when you power on. Once unlocked, always unlocked.

Your phone has the following radio frequencies:
2G: GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G: HSDPA 850 / 1900 / 2100
LTE: 700 / 850 / 1700 / 1800 / 1900 / 2100 / 2600

Compare to this table of Carriers to find the best match for a carrier in Japan.
