Motorola Moto G System Update Means my Phone no Longer Plays WAV Files

I have been happily playing wav files through Google Play Music on my Motorola Moto G for the past 6 months, but following my phone's first system update (now running Android 4.4.4) I get a music playback error ('couldn't play the track you requested') whenever I try to play wav files. Why is this happening?!

I had that issue too. Made me pay for music player app.

Phones don't play files, apps do. And there are free apps that play wav files. Look for them.
