Galaxy y error message contacting Market

Trying to update my WhatsApp, I went to download from the Google Play but was unsuccessful. I followed the help files which told me to stop & then restart Play, but only ended up with market. This fails to load showing server error. I have tried switching off & on airline mode, cleared caches on the app & market & services framework. Neither market feedback agent nor updater are running. I don't want to hard restore as I don't want to lose my photos. Help please with some advice.
