Problems with Google Play and YouTube

[AC Question]

When my son tries to connect to Google Play and YouTube, he gets a "no connection, retry" message. On retry we are getting a certificate error. It's not our WiFi connection ... other connections working fine.

Which phone is he using? On some phones, you can check in the status bar if you are connected to Google services. Without it, you can still use the internet but not Google apps like the Play Store and YT.
