speed dial does not work

I have set up speed dial single digits for several of my contact but I keep getting a voice recording that Verizon cannot complete the call as dialed...even for #1 which is pre-set for voicemail.

Welcome to Android Central! Which phone do you have? Are you certain it has a speed dial feature like that--i.e, pressing and holding a dialer keypad button until it calls a preset number? Most phones these days have abandoned that feature. What I do is to create a folder on the homescreen of Direct Dial widgets of my frequent contacts. So tapping the folder brings up all of the Direct Dial widgets, and a single tap of one of them will call that person. Use the Direct Dial widget, not the Contact widget.
