I read all about the S4 getting excessively hot last year but had no problems with mine for 1.5 years - until now. As of the past week, my phone is getting quite hot and the battery drains in a matter of 4-5 hours. What gives?? is it time for a new phone or did a recent Android update do something? Help!

Take a look in your battery usage stats and see if there seems to be any abnormal drain.
Also consider that your battery may be beginning to fail.

Thanks for the reply. I checked battery usage and it just shows Exchange Services at 37% and Android at 31%. Not sure if that is excessive but I've tried turning everything else off (like Facebook, etc). I fear it's the end of the line for the battery!

Not necessarily. Exchange Services should not be using that much battery. Do a search and you'll find that others have had the problem. What's causing it to do that in your case I don't know....trying over and over to sync something, perhaps. Try a simple Soft Reset, which may stop it temporarily, but if there are further problems with it and you can't get to the root of them, disable.

You mention a recent Android update. If you've had one, some say it's a good idea afterwards to wipe the Cache Partition. Even if it's not, it won't do any harm so you may care to consider doing that:
