recognising an external hdd

[AC Question]

as usual a newbi probably asking something stupid but can anyone tell me how to see my samsung 1tb usb connected hdd from jellybean. i have it connected to a xbmc quad core android 4.2 smart tv box and wanted to store films and photos on it but at present i cannot even see it to access. i belive it is formatted for windows (works on my computer) do i need to reformat or should i be seeing it in settings and storage

Welcome to Android Central! To connect external storage, you would need an OTG (On-The-Go) cable, and the device would have to support OTG technology. Even then, OTG cables are mostly for connecting with USB flash drives. It might be tricky to use an HDD, although I have read where people have been successful--as long as the HDD was formatted in FAT32, not NTFS.
