Got it from a family member - I was able to delete the contacts from the contact list (tap contacts on the homepage) but when I tap messaging from the homepage and a new message opens, when it asks to enter recipient and I tap the person icon top right, it brings up a list of over 200 contacts which can not be deleted by the usual method - HELP

Go back to the Contacts app and tap the menu button (bottom left). Select Contacts to Display and see if they are in any of those categories.
Did you factory reset the phone to new, and it has only your Google account now?

Thanks for your reply! I was concerned that since the phone is linked to the original users account for billing, that the factory reset would screw it up is that not the case?

I would say no, but let me check that with another in case I miss something.
Any data you / someone put on from new would be wiped, but all the carrier software would still be there. The carrier would base the billing on the sim card.
What effect if any changing the Google account would have with the carrier I want to check, but very unlikely to matter.

The factory reset shouldn't mess anything up. Go ahead and wipe the device.
