Why did my Note 3 screen go dark when I was in Jamaica?

Note 3 screen went dark in Jamaica...

A puzzling thing happened with my Note 3. I was travelling from the US to Jamaica, and with a decent charge on the batttery, the screen went dark. I did not opt for any international package, had bluetooth, WiFi off and the phone in airplane mode to conserve battery power.

After about 6 hours in country, the screen went black, and no amount of resetting, turning it off or on helped. I locked it away for the remainder of the trip, the battery finally ran down and I tried to charge it when I got home, and everything worked fine. Screen displayed, all functions working. So what happened?

Did you try a battery pull? I have had this happen on three or four occasions over the on both my Note 3 and my wife's over the past 18 months or so. I have not yet found any relation to currently running apps, or usage leading up to the failure. A battery pull has restored normal operation each time that this has happened on our devices.
