how can i get rid of unwanted apps on my Straight Talk, ZTE Android phone?

I have all these Google Play crap apps (newspapers, books, etc) that I will never use and Google/phone manufacturer put it all on. Now it is taking up space and battery life. Anyone know how to remove from ZTE?

It's not using battery - only the apps you're running are using battery.

As far as space, yes. Use Application manager to clear cache, clear data, force stop and uninstall (in that order) the apps you don't want.

If an app won't uninstall (it's installed as a system app), you have a decision to make - root the phone and risk doing something that stops the phone from working - and voids the warranty, or live with the app being on the phone. If the phone is rooted you can remove anything (including Android and most of Linux, which is why you can cause the phone to stop working).
