I have taken out the battery and the sim card and reinserted them several times as well as restarted the phone. There is no internet connection and yet it can access wifi. I have had the phone for 1 year.

Wifi has nothing to do with the SIM card (you don't even need a cellphone account to use wifi). Evidently the card is bad. The "big 2" (AT&T and TMobile) will replace the card for free (the salesdroid's 2 minutes is worth more than the card). Your carrier may charge for a new one (Straight Talk does most of the time). Have the carrier check the phone first, though - the SIM socket may be defective (like a broken contact). Or the contacts could be dirty (like if you live in a coal-producing area).

OTOH, if you have AT&T, just bring the phone into a store and they'll have you walking out with a working phone (unless the phone is defective) in a couple of minutes, no questions asked, other than "can I help you with anything else?"
