One option for phone lock?

Okay I went to set a pin code to unlock my phone but all the options are grayed out except the password.
Swipe, Pattern, Pin or None cannot be selected.
I get the Turned off by Administrator, encryption policy or credential storage.
Frustrated.

Is the device encrypted? Is it your personal device, or is it a work device? Encrypted devices only allow a password, although I thought they also allow a PIN.

You could also try going to Settings>Security>Device Administrators​, and see if there is anything there besides Android Device Manager. If there is, make sure they're unchecked.

Android Device Manager and DriveMode are both there but unchecked.

I'm new to Android so how do I know if it is? It's my personal phone

Go to Settings>Security>Encryption. Is there an option to Encrypt Phone? If not, the phone is probably encrypted already. This is something you would have remembered doing, unless someone else did it for you.
