There are a million folders, most of which are empty, but not one of them contains any of the music files I carefully put onto the card ready for my holiday next week. The photos I put on the card ages ago are all there, but the music player cannot see the music files and nor can I when I search on "my files".

If they don't show up in My Files, they're not there. I don't know how you put them there, but they never got there.

If you connected the phone to the computer through a USB hub, then transferred a lot of files at once (like marking a few folders, then dragging them all to the SD card), it probably didn't work - many USB hubs don't work well for transferring large amounts of data.

Connect the card to the computer directly, using a USB adapter (directly to a USB port on the computer) and see if the files are there - they're probably not. Transfer them again, a few at a time.
