Why does my Samsung Galaxy 3 switch itself on and off?

Why does my samsung galaxy 3 switch itself on and off

It just switches on then straight off then straight back on continuously. It has done it 3 time in the last 24hrs to stop it I have to plug my charger in then it switches off and stays off

A fault in the battery or battery circuit? A faulty power button or circuit?
