Wondering how to update my SGH-1337M to 4.4.4. It is at 4.4.2 currently and there is no updates through Kies or from Software Update in About. How do I upgrade to 4.4.4 and SHOULD I upgrade to 4.4.4?

Re: Update

If there are no updates available from your carrier yet, you can't update. Should you? It's called the Ann Landers Question - would you be better off with 4.4.4 or with 4.4.2? (IOW, is there anything that 4.4.4 does that would bother you more than the advantages and/or additions? Going from 4.3 to 4.4, remember, we lost the ability for multiple apps to write to the same folder on the SD card.)

Re: Update

1) Clear the system cache. An update (it was probably from 4.3 to 4.4.2) shouldn't need it (mine didn't, my wife's didn't), but some phones do.

2) Look in your battery stats (Settings/General/Battery) to see what's eating most of your battery. The screen should be first, followed by Google and system stuff. If there's something else using a lot of battery, that's your problem.

Re: Update

Tap the graph at the top. Look at the bottom, at the Awake line (after the phone's been sitting for a few hours doing nothing). It should be sleeping almost all the time. If not, you have an app keeping it awake, and that uses a lot of battery.

Re: Update

That's about normal - email and phone wake it periodically, for short checks. So do a few other apps. It was awake when the screen was on at the beginning - it has to be. It's not a "non-sleeping" problem.

Re: Update

Make sure you have the files for both downgrading (assuming you can downgrade the S4 to 4.3 - if it's like the Note 3 you can't - which is why I won't until at least a few months after the 4.4.4 update to mine comes out) and upgrading, so if downgrading doesn't fix the problem, you can upgrade back.

Re: Update

I looked on Sammobile Firmwares and didn't see anything later than 4.2.2, so I don't know where you got your 4.4.2 or where you'd get a 4.4.1 for it, but if there is an earlier 4.4, it should be flashable.

I also noticed phone goes does down much faster then it should when I'm using it. 12% lost just using this app for 20 minutes. My screen brightness is on lowest and I have power saving mode on.

Re: Update

The only big difference as far as I'm concerned is the ssl fix in 4.4.4. The rest of it is just stuff I don't care about or use. It's not worth losing root (which would happen with my phone), since I don't use the phone for anything secure. (Over the air anything is inherently insecure, so I do all my secure stuff with an Ethernet connection and a PC.)

Re: Update

The carrier has to release 4.4.4 for that model phone for their network, so about all you can do is wait. In the mean time, do all the things that are normally done to conserve battery - short screen on time (I use Tasker to keep the screen on longer when I'm reading Flipbook or an app that I want a longer on time for), all radios not in use turned off, etc. (Also, try to not run the battery down to more than 40% charge level. Lithium batteries don't last as long if you do. See the second chat at Battery University - How to Prolong Lithium-based Batteries and do the math yourself if you prefer, but 50% is about the best charge point for maximum life, as far as how often you have to replace batteries. (A spare isn't very expensive, so if you need 100% of the battery capacity carry a fully charged spare and swap them when the one in the phone reaches around 50%.)
