The Nexus 5 with Kitkat 4.4.4 had some issues with GPS. Either the connection would drop or the search would give widely inaccurate results or most often the device would fail to get a lock on the GPS. Several users have faced this issue (see link- https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/nexus/EkllXr0ZlZM%5B1-25-false%5D).

If I switch my Nexus 5 from Kitkat to Lollipop, will the GPS issue be resolved? Hard to imagine a Google device can give trouble with a search function!

Maybe there is a bad GPS radio in your particular device? Mine is correct.

Install GPS Status & Toolbox to see if it's a problem with the GPS radio or the app that's using it. (If it doesn't work using GPS Status, bring it back for a reflash or replacement - it's still under warranty. Sometimes an OTA update glitches and has to be redone manually by the carrier's repair facility or some other shop. [If you do it yourself, you void the warranty.])
