I just bought a nexus 5, and immediately i realize that it won't let me add an account. I always receive the "Can't establish a reliable connection to the server" error. I've tried multiple things such as the youtube trick, date and time, hard reset, and then I heard that rooting the device then changing a folder called "Host" would do the trick, however, since it's a new phone, and even after rooting, and I can't access google play, I can't download any file manager so I can get to the folder. I tried downloading some file manager apk files, but the phone won't open them to install -.-

The hosts (not Host - and spelling counts in Android) file is used instead of the DNS server your phone is using, which will be your ISP's server if you're on wifi or your carrier's server if you're on mobile data. And, since DNS servers are normally accurate (they update almost constantly), about the only reason to change the hosts file is to prevent your browser from actually reaching certain sites. (IOW, if a site you regularly visit has a link to a site that has porn banners, and you don't want to see them, you add that banner server's address to your hosts file and tell it that the actual address is your computer. then all you see is a blank space that's been left for the banner to appear in.)

Your problem sounds like a whole host of issues - possibly stemming from the fact that the phone is a Chinese clone that you can't put Google apps on. Try the Amazon Appstore instead. Go to Amazon, try to download some free app and it'll set you up to install the Appstore app. Then you can get pretty much the same apps from Amazon (and for the same prices - free ones are still free).

As far as not being able to connect to your email server, that could be due to a slow connection to the email server (the path between your entry ppoint to the internet and theirs determines that), their server is having problems, your connection to the internet is having problems ... there are too many possibilities to guess which one is causing your problem. You need someone with some experience to take your phone in hand and check a few things to determine where the problem is.
