When I long hold the home button, I get a semi-circle with Google at the top. What else can this do? Can I add favorites to it and if so, how?

Welcome to Android Central! That's the Google Now function. In order to reassign the Home button, you'd have to root the phone: How to Remap the Hardware Buttons On Your Android Phone. Or you could install Nova Launcher Prime (no root required), and assign a Home double-tap to some function: Use Nova Launcher Prime gestures for faster app access - TechRepublic

Mine works swiping up the home button and automatically any search app will be added, such as DuckDuckGo.

As Diddy said Nova prime is great to do that sort of things. Even with the free version you can custom the action of the home button when in your homescreens. Can be an app, settings, ... Very handy.
